Settling into Panajachel and Nahuala Campaign

Hey, so now that I am back from San Cristobal, I can continue summarizing my time in Guatemala, hopefully by Friday I’ll be able to post about my trip to Mexico. After being in Antigua for 5 days, I came back to Panajachel with Andrew and starting settling into my home here in Jucanya. Right now Andrew and I live in a small compound, about a 10 minute walk from downtown Panajachel. Our neighbors are all Guatemalans and mostly have indigenous roots here in Guatemala. I’ll post some pics of the place later on.

During my week back in Pana, I helped Andrew out on one of his eyeglass-selling campaigns. The campaign took place in Nahuala (Naw-wah-la), a remote town about 2.5 hours bus ride from Pana. We arrived promptly in the morning and saw a line of Guatemalans waiting for eye examinations and potentially, glasses. We arrived on Sunday which is the weekly market day. We were almost surely the only gringos in town.

The campaign went very well and I was fascinated to see the reaction of the patients after putting on corrective lenses. Many of the older woman immediately looked to their textiles and examined the details of the fabric (frequently fabric that they had sewed themselves).

*Yours truly, on the streets of Nahuala

After a week adjusting to Panajachel (and taking some much needed Spanish lessons) I moved onto San Pedro, a small town of 13,000 across Lake Atitlan. I’ll explain more about San Pedro in my next post.

Welcome to Panajachel. The eyeglasses thing was much appreciated in Nahuala, I’m sure. Good job!
